The early 19th century saw experimentation with multi-stringed guitars with Vienna being the center for this trend. G.A. Staufer, J.A. Staufer, Reis and others led the way. This instrument is modeled after one in a private collection in Vienna. The tone is clear, bright with wonderful bass and fine balance across the tonal range. The extra unfretted bass strings are commonly tuned to D, C or A and are well suited to the music of composers such as Napolean Coste, Johann Kaspar Mertz, Stoffren Degen and many others.
